I just stumbled across Out of Print, which is a clothing company that features out-of-print book covers (classics, many of them) on T-shirts. They look great. Check this one out. For each T-shirt, one book is donated to a community in need through Books for Africa.
The T-shirt that really drew my eye was this one:
Because, obviously, Salinger has been on my mind a lot lately. All of us at ASF have been plowing through retrospectives and reflections. There’s Dave Eggers’s at the New Yorker. There’s Nathaniel Rich’s fantasy of a U-Haul truck, filled with paper, headed toward a publisher’s office. We returned to Charles D’Ambrosio’s thoughtful, empathic piece “Salinger and Sobs,” which is available in the Tin House anthology The Story about the Story.
The day we heard the news about Salinger’s death, we were in the midst of an ASF staff meeting. Our production manager interrupted us with headlines. There was an awkward pause. And then we started talking about what will happen to his (unpublished) work, when the movies will start coming out, etc. Our conversation turned again–to ways to honor him, celebrate him. And we came up with this:
- Tribute to J. D. Salinger
Friday, February 26, 7 p.m.
Prothro Theater, The Harry Ransom Center
Local writers and members of the UT community commemorate the life of J. D. Salinger with readings from his work and correspondence. The event will mark the opening of a small display of Salinger manuscripts, letters, and inscribed books from the Ransom Center’s collections.
We have a great lineup of writers, and we are thrilled to be cosponsoring this event with the Ransom Center. Once we get a few more things worked out, we can’t wait to share all the details.

Cool.
Yes, quite cool.
