NewPages.com Cites ASF’s “Passion” and “Spice”

16 Jun

From the opening of NewPages.com’s June 15, 2009, review by Kenneth Nichols:

Editor Stacey Swann opens this issue [Spring 2009] of American Short Fiction with a concise, impassioned defense of the short story, relishing its unique power. The modern short story, Swann says, “contains multitudes. . . multiple faces, multiple forms–so many, it seems constraining to define it as a single object.” The stories chosen for this issue seem to bear out this assessment. The three lengthy stories are interspersed with brief, somewhat experimental pieces that add a great deal of spice.

He goes on to discuss the “The Heart Sutra” by Joyce Carol Oates, “The Woodcarver’s Daughter” by Paul Yoon, and selections of AM/PM by Amelia Gray.

This wide-ranging issue is further filled out by Smith Henderson, Rachel B. Glaser, Kim Chinquee, and Joe Wenderoth.
