Support a Bookstore and an Indie Publisher

Those clever people in Tin Houses.

According to GalleyCat, between August 1 and November 30, 2010, Tin House Books will accept unsolicited manuscripts if the submission includes a receipt that proves the author has purchased a book at a bookstore.

The same rule applies for unsolicited work submitted to its magazine between September 1 and December 30, 2010.

Remember: Tin House Books does not permit electronic submissions. Tin House magazine does. Read the rules.

A fun final note, as reported by GalleyCat: “Writers who cannot afford to buy a book or cannot get to an actual bookstore are encouraged to explain why in haiku or one sentence (100 words or fewer).”

Responses to this new submission policy here and here.

Does literary publishing need to be even more insular? If you’re not already One of Us, Tin House is saying, Don’t Bother. Isn’t insularity one of literary publishing’s biggest problems – and arguably the main reason it can’t attract more than a tiny audience? http://bit.ly/a0OymY

In addition to the other responses we mentioned–another from Dzanc (from their release):

For the month of July, we at Dzanc will donate a book to a school/library for each proof of purchase provided to us of a book bought at an independent bookstore. The book bought should be a work of literary fiction, though does not have to be a book published by Dzanc Books or any of our imprints. Simply send a copy of your receipt to the address below and Dzanc will donate a new book to a library/school of your choosing.

Andy, in my earlier comment I mention Dzanc’s response and efforts to increase lit sales and keep the brick and mortar stores around. You can read more at http://www.dzancbooks.org/front.html.
