The American Short(er) Fiction Prize is now open! Got something great that's right around 1,000 words? Or under? We'd like to see it. Read up on our contest guidelines (right here) and hop to it. The multitalented Michael Martone judges. Our deadline is May 15. Fusebox, we salute you! Fusebox, an Austin-based contemporary art and performance festival, brings its curatorial gaze to writers' homes and studios. ASF Editor Jill Meyers talks with independent radio producer Deepa Donde about Fusebox's excellent progressive reading party/playdate The Writer's Room. Check out their interview here; and then hop over to the Fusebox site to listen to excerpts from the writers' work and additional interviews, see portraits of the writers in their studios, and register for the tour.
Congratulations Department Short Story Contest winners! We have them. Our first-place winner is James DeWille, and he's the author of "Last Days on Rossmore." Justin Cronin selected this story from hundreds of entries, calling it "utterly original." Congrats to James! His story will appear in our summer issue. Second place belongs to Suzanne Barnecut for "On Great Mountain." Cronin admired its deft use of second person and said the story is "full of wise observations." Cheers, y'all! We'll be in the Best American Short Stories again! Taylor Antrim's story "Pilgrim Life," which appeared in our Fall 2011 issue, has been selected for inclusion in the new volume, edited by Tom Perrotta. It'll be out in October. Happy news! Susan Steinberg wins a Pushcart. Her remarkable story "Cowboys," reprinted in Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses (available here), was first featured in American Short Fiction's spring 2010 issue. We are thrilled for you, Susan.
