The American Short Fiction Workshop Series offers classes this fall. All students will receive individualized attention from instructors, be given targeted exercises to generate new work, and gain access to a supportive community of writers. Classes are limited to 12 students. One is class will be held in Austin; the other two are being offered online. Fiction Workshop (Austin)8 Wednesdays, 6:30 to 9 p.m., at the AGE Building, 3710 Cedar Street. Begins February 15, 2012. The purpose of this course is to explore the craft of fiction writing and to provide a supportive environment in order to help students become more confident in their ability to bring stories to the page. Beginning writers and old pros alike are often nervous before submitting their work to a group of critical readers. In this workshop, we’ll focus on helping a story find its ultimate form. All drafts--early or late--will be considered, and readers will work together to find elements of the story that are succeeding and those that can succeed with the right tweaking. As the writer Ron Carlson says, no story should be given up for dead. Success is simply a matter of digging into the text and revealing the story that was there all along.
