Our featured story is "The Peripatetic Coffin," by Ethan Rutherford, which will appear in BASS 2009.
The sound of iron walls adjusting to the underwater pressure around you was like the sound of improbability announcing itself: a broad, deep, awake-you-from-your-stupor kind of salvo. The first time we heard it, we thought we were dead; the second time we heard it, we realized we were.

David had an extremely difficult time finding Goliath. It turned out he looked nothing like a bear but rather like a very large human being. His quads were about the circumference of David's head, which David found admirable. His uniform was an even deeper, more magnificent blue-green than the other Philistines'; plus, he had a special black sheep's-fur hat that covered his ears. David bet he would look great in a hat like that.
